Officer hurt in Brampton courthouse shooting a 29-year veteran

The few details emerging about the Peel police officer injured in a shooting at the Brampton courthouse reveal him to be a family man and a 29-year veteran of the force.

Const. Mike Klarenbeek — badge number 1161 — was shot around 11 a.m. Thursday, while on duty as a security officer at the A. Grenville & William Davis Courthouse on Hurontario Street. The gunman was shot dead by another police officer.

Klarenbeek, 53, is now in stable condition at Sunnybrook hospital with his family by his side.

“He’s a good man and a good officer,” Staff Sgt. Dan Richardson said at a news conference a few hours after the shooting. “He’s a family man.”

The Toronto Star reports Klarenbeek is married with two children and, according to his LinkedIn profile, he attended Bramalea Secondary School and then Sheridan College for law enforcement and security.

Gary Batasar told the Star he has known Klarenbeek a long time and he is respected, easygoing and always cordial — even with the accused.

Richardson said he believed Klarenbeek had been stationed at the courthouse for around five years, but couldn’t confirm exactly.
