Brampton church reduced to skeleton after 2-alarm fire

A two-alarm fire has gutted a Ukrainian church in Brampton, leaving only a skeleton.

Crews brought in about 15 trucks to battle the blaze at St. Elias the Prophet Church on Heritage Road, near Bovaird Drive West, on Saturday morning.

A witness told 680News the fire was “massive.”

“A good distance away when the wind’s blowing you could almost feel the heat down the road from it,” he said.

“It’s an old structure with a lot of dry wood.”

There are no reports of any injuries, and it’s not yet clear how the fire started.

“There will be an investigation likely to determine what the cause of fire is, and we will probably shadow that investigation in the event that there’s any criminality to it,” said Peel police Const. Thomas Ruttan.

Heritage Road is closed to traffic in the area.
