3 Durham police employees charged for ‘Central Cells’ YouTube video

Durham police have laid charges against three employees after a video depicting three disgruntled officers surfaced on YouTube earlier this year.

The fake movie trailer for Central Cells shows three officers on “a quest for freedom” from their cellblock duties.

All three employees were from the Court Services Branch, police said Wednesday. Two of them are sworn officers and are facing charges of discreditable conduct under the Police Services Act (PSA).

The third is a civilian Special Constable, not a sworn officer, which police say means his discipline is being managed by internal policy. His name will not be released as he is not subject to the PSA.

Sgt. Mike Glennie, who is charged with discreditable conduct, will next appear before a hearing on May 5.

The second officer, a detective constable, is also charged with discreditable conduct. He cannot be named until his hearing begins on April 15.

At the time the video went public, Chief Mike Ewles said he was disappointed on several levels.

“Our Courts Branch plays an incredibly important role in our business and I want to assure members of the community that we take this important function very seriously,” he said.

“The safe and secure handling of people in our holding cells is a top priority for this police service. We invest heavily in training and continually review safety procedures to ensure this vitally important area is managed properly.”

The video has since been removed from YouTube.
