‘The Ultimate Warrior’ Jim Hellwig dies at 54

The wrestler Jim Hellwig, better known by his stage name “The Ultimate Warrior,” has died.

He was 54. The cause of death is not yet known.

In a statement on its website Wednesday, the WWE said it was “shocked and deeply saddened” to learn of Hellwig’s death.

He had just been inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame on April 5.

The WWE said Hellwig began his career in 1987 and quickly went on to become one of the biggest stars in WWE history. The Ultimate Warrior became champion of what was then the WWF at WrestleMania VI, defeating Hulk Hogan in an epic encounter.

“We are grateful that just days ago, Warrior had the opportunity to take his rightful place in the WWE Hall of Fame and was also able to appear at WrestleMania 30 and Monday Night Raw to address his legions of fans.

“WWE sends its sincere condolences to Warrior’s family, friends and fans.”

Hellwig is survived by his wife Dana and his two daughters.
