Woman rescued from St. Catharines house fire

Emergency crews rescued a woman from a house fire in St. Catharines while another resident smashed through a window to escape the flames early on Tuesday morning.

The fire began in a home on Clarke Street, near Welland Avenue and Lake Street, around 2 a.m.

There were multiple apartment units in the home, Niagara Police say, and the fire began in a basement unit.

The woman was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. The man who smashed through a window sustained serious lacerations and was also taken to hospital.

There’s no word yet on the cause of the fire.

The cost of the damage is estimated at $100,000.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office is investigating.
