Adam Vaughan launches federal Liberal campaign

City councillor Adam Vaughan officially launched his bid to be the federal Liberal representative for Trinity-Spadina Wednesday night.

Vaughan is seeking the nomination and kicked off off his campaign at the Madison in the Annex.

“We have to make sure Toronto thrives, in fact all cities thrive,” said Vaughan.

Over 100 people joined Vaughan for the launch of his nomination, including former Toronto mayor David Crombie who said Vaughan has the personal qualities we need in politics.

Vaughan says it’s a unique, once-in-a-generation opportunity with a national leader like Justin Trudeau who is committed to cities and housing.

“He has reached out across this country to leaders like myself to build a national strategy that will deliver the dollars we need to make our cities great and wonderful places to live,” he explained.

The Liberal leader was on Breakfast Television on Wednesday and while he didn’t address Vaughan’s chances of securing the nomination, Trudeau did say he was impressed by the current crop of Canadian candidates.

“One of the things I’m really excited about, across the country, is the calibre of people who are stepping up and wanting to be part of the Liberal team. When you have someone of Adam’s calibre deciding to throw his hat into the ring and seek the nomination for the Liberal party, it shows that yes, we’re having a contested nomination,” Trudeau said.

“In Trinity Spadina there are three candidates and it should be interesting to watch.”

Christine Tabbert and Ryan Davey are also seeking the Liberal nomination.

The riding was vacated by NDP MP Olivia Chow when she resigned in March to run for Toronto mayor. Elections Canada hasn’t announced the byelection date yet.

If Vaughan wins the nomination, his main opponent would be NDP candidate Joe Cressy, a long-time Chow supporter.
