Streetsville hockey coach arrested in 90s sexual assault

Peel police have arrested a minor hockey coach in connection with sexual assaults dating back to the 1990s.

Michael Kachanovsky, 48, of Lindsay, was arrested on Friday and charged with sexual assault and sexual exploitation.

Police allege the incidents took place when Kachanovsky was a coach with the Streetsville Minor Hockey Association and a big brother with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Peel.

He was coach in the early 90s, police said, and worked with Big Brothers between September 1990 and June 1994.

“Our organization has been made aware that a former volunteer has been charged in relation to several incidents,” Shari Lynn Ladanchuck, president and CEO of Big Brothers said in a statement.

“We will be working with the police to fulfill any requests for information and will continue to examine our internal processes as they relate to child protection.”

Kachanovsky will next appear in court on May 26.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information can call police at 905-453-2121 (ext. 3460) or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
