Woman’s charges upgraded in fatal Kensington Market hit-and-run

Police have upgraded charges for an Oshawa woman in the death of a Toronto man after a hit-and-run in Kensington Market on May 10.

Jay McGinn, 28, was getting into a cab when he was struck. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition and died in hospital last Thursday.

Karen Fyfe, 31, was arrested by police on May 11, just hours after McGinn’s mother, Lisa Falls, made an impassioned plea outside St. Michael’s Hospital for the driver to surrender.

Fyfe was initially charged with failing to stop causing bodily harm.

She now faces impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death and failing to stop after causing bodily harm resulting in death.

Fyfe was released on $15,000 bail last Wednesday. She must adhere to a 6 p.m. curfew and is prohibited from driving, drinking or consuming drugs. She must also attend drug and alcohol counselling.

She is scheduled to return to court on June 16.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated the accused surrendered to police.
