Ministry of Environment to investigate Humber River chemical spill

Firefighters are on scene after a chemical spill was spotted in the Humber River Saturday night.

“We located the spill, at Islington Avenue and the Humber River, coming from a storm drain,” District fire chief John Zovak told CityNews. “Toronto fire was able to isolate the spill. The spill, at this time, has been contained.”

Zovak says it is believed that hazardous material was dumped into the sewer system at a location west of the spill. There has been no word on just what the material is.

“Right now we’re trying to determine any hazard to the environment and wildlife downstream,” he explained.

The Ministry of the Environment will be investigating the incident.
