Fire Safety Awareness Week kicks off in Toronto on heels of Brampton townhouse fire

Toronto Fire Services is launching its Safety Awareness Week on Monday.

The safety blitz comes on the heels of a deadly fire in a Brampton townhouse complex Sunday morning that killed 10-year-old Nicolas Gabriel and left up to 100 people homeless.

Early Monday a fire spread through two Rexdale garages on Clearbrooke Circle near Kipling and Rexdale just after 3 a.m. Firefighters quickly knocked down the flames. No injuries were reported.

The focus during this week’s safety campaign will be on highrise buildings, including rental units and condos.

About half of the residents in Toronto live in multi-storey buildings.

Fire Services will be working closely with Toronto Community Housing throughout the week, going door-to-door to hand out brochures on how to survive a highrise fire.

Events will be held throughout the week offering hotdogs, stickers, colouring books and an inflatable fire truck. Below is a list:

  • Monday, June 9; 5 p.m.-8 p.m. at 30 Falstaff Ave.
  • Tuesday, June 10; 5 p.m.-8 p.m. at 30 Gordonridge Pl.
