Charges upgraded in Alliston fatal hit-and-run

Charges have been upgraded in a crash that killed a public works employee north of the GTA.

The OPP said two road workers were painting lines on Victoria Street, between Church and King, on Friday morning, when they were hit by a Ford F150 pickup truck, which then left the scene.

One of the workers, Geoffrey Gaston, 41, from New Tecumseth, died in hospital from his injuries.

Another worker was also seriously injured, but she will survive.

Police later found the 31-year-old driver of the pickup, Marcello Fracassi, from New Tecumseth, and charged him with failing to remain at the scene and impaired driving causing bodily harm. He faces two additional charges of impaired driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death.

He has a bail hearing in Barrie on Monday.
