Toronto man accused of dismembering ex-lover not a murderer: lawyer

The lawyer defending a Toronto man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend and carving her body into pieces says he shouldn’t be punished for a crime his mother committed.
In her closing arguments on Tuesday, Kathryn Wells said Chun Qi Jiang did “terrible and appalling things” to cover up the gruesome slaying of 41-year-old Guang Hua Liu.
But she said that doesn’t make him a murderer.
Liu’s body parts were found scattered across the Greater Toronto Area the summer of 2012, and Jiang was arrested shortly afterward.
He was originally charged with second-degree murder but that charge was upgraded to first-degree murder last summer.
Jiang’s mother has since died. Her death wasn’t considered suspicious.
Wells said her client did everything he could to protect his mother.
“She is now gone from this world and he doesn’t need to protect her anymore,” the lawyer said.
Prosecutors will make their closing arguments later Tuesday.
