Mississauga banquet hall tenant dispute leaves wedding couples in the cold

A Mississauga banquet hall has abruptly locked its doors because of tenant lease dispute, leaving dozens of couples who are about to tie the knot in a state of panic.

Anthony Di Donato and Ashley Teixeira got the bad news Wednesday that they won’t be having their wedding at the Grand Metropolitan on July 19.

“We’re feeling really stressed and pressed for time. We never saw this coming so it was quite a shock to us and we’re really disappointed that our venue let us down,” Teixeira said.

Other couples were notified by a June 21 notice posted at the hall’s front door that said the tenant’s lease was terminated by the landlord because of back rent totaling nearly $250,000.

The hall was being rented and run by Dynamic Hospitality & Entertainment Group. The company said refunds are being offered and couples are being given the option to rebook at its other event venues.

“We were just as shocked to see it closed as everyone else,” a company spokesperson said.

Dynamic owns a number of big name venues throughout the GTA, including Yuk Yuk’s, Atlantis at Ontario Place and Wendel Clark’s.

Mina Bassalious, whose wedding is in September, said Dynamic offered to return his deposit or the use of one of its other event venues but he said there’s no way he’s going to book again with the company.

“Eventually we got an email pretty much confirming everything that we’d heard that the landlord is kicking them out for whatever reason. So now I’m just dealing with whatever is going on and trying to figure out something else,” said the soon-to-be groom.

Another groom told CityNews: “We pretty much exhausted our search before and this was the best possibility so now we’re going…into that pitfall again of searching.”
