Public reaction mixed over Mayor Ford’s post-rehab remarks

Public reaction on social media after Mayor Rob Ford addressed the public for the first time following rehab was mixed.

Ford said that before attending rehab for alcohol and drug use at the GreeneStone facility in Muskoka he was in complete denial and had convinced himself he didn’t have a problem.

He acknowledged that it will be long road to recovery and apologized to family, residents of Toronto and councillors, including Karen Stintz, who was the target of one his many lewd comments caught on audio and video in recent months.

Some on Twitter weren’t buying his apology.

Melanie Hales tweeted, “@CityNews @TOMayorFord I don’t believe him. Damage done anyway so it matters not. Although for his kids sake I hope he stays clean.”

Bridy Grant posted, “@CityNews @TOMayorFord I wish him the best on a personal level. But we can’t risk leaving our city in his hands.”

Still others thought he was taking responsibility for his actions.

Julian Hearst said, “@CityNews @TOMayorFord It was courageous and sincere. I think he’s on a path to successful recovery and reelection. #TOpoli”

Derrick Mitchell said, “@CityNews @TOMayorFord Good honest words, but we need consistent action and rebuilding trust. He should answer questions though #transparency”

Read other comments that people posted on Twitter following Ford’s remarks.

On Monday, Ford said his decision to go to rehab “changed” his life forever and that he has completed hundreds of hours of intensive therapy and credited it with saving his life.

The professionals at GreeneStone “forced me to confront my personal demons,” he said.

The mayor said that he learned his addition is a disease “that will require treatment for the rest of my life.”
