Transgender woman files human rights complaints after detention in men's jail

A transgender woman from London, England, who was held in a men’s jail in Milton, Ont., after being detained over an apparent immigration issue in Toronto has filed two human rights complaints.

Avery Edison, 26, says she has filed complaints with both the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario and the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

In February, Edison was on a visit to Toronto when she says she was detained by the Canada Border Services Agency at Pearson airport.

She had been travelling on a United Kingdom passport that identified her as female.

Edison was brought to a male detention facility, Maplehurst Correctional Centre, before eventually being transferred to a female facility.

Edison says Toronto law firm Dewart Gleason is handling her case pro bono.
