Simcoe Street makeover aims to ease traffic for cars, cyclists

Changes aimed at improving traffic flow come to a portion of Simcoe Street in downtown Toronto starting on Wednesday.

Traffic will be permitted to travel both directions between Front and Wellington streets after being converted from a southbound one-way.

New bikes lanes have been installed running both directions from Queen Street West to Wellington Street. New traffic lights have also been added to direct the bike traffic.

And an extra wide curb lane was built at Queen Street West and Richmond Street and between King and Wellington streets to allow for easier pick-up and drop-off at those intersections.

“The installations are just one more part of the city’s overall congestion management plan that will help all road users move more effectively in this area,” said Coun. Denzil Minnan-Wong, chair of city’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee, in a statement.

According to a report in the Toronto Star, signs have been posted between Queen and Front Street, that warns drivers of a $150-fine for parked or idling cars. There are also new lines painted in the road to form a buffer zone between the bike lane and car traffic.

Will you be taking advantage of these changes? What other roads in the downtown core should be upgraded?
