Man airlifted to hospital, 7 others hurt in multi-vehicle Vaughan crash

Eight people were injured, including a 21-year-old man who had to be airlifted to a Toronto hospital, following a seven-vehicle crash in Vaughan, York regional police say.

The crash occurred around 10 a.m. on Thursday morning near the Promenade Mall entrance by Bathurst Street and Clark Avenue West.

Police say the victim, who was airlifted with critical injuries to Sunnybrook hospital, is suspected of impaired driving and was responsible for the collision. He is under arrest and will be charged, they say. The other victims, whose conditions weren’t immediately known, were taken to hospital by ground ambulance.

Witness Melake Michael told CityNews that he saw from his rearview mirror a gold-coloured VW car approaching his vehicle very quickly and the driver “didn’t look like he was going to stop.”

“In fact, he went right through the red light,” and almost hit a woman on her bike, he said.

Const. Andy Pattenden appealed for more witnesses to come forward.

“At this point in time, we do suspect that drugs or alcohol were a factor involved in this crash,” he said.

The intersection is closed for the police investigation and is expected to reopen around 10 p.m.
