Suspect in custody after fatal Victoria Park assault

Toronto police have a suspect in custody after a violent assault early on Tuesday morning in the city’s east end.

Police said the man was found with a head injury inside a TTC bus shelter on Victoria Park Avenue at Huntingwood Drive just before 3 a.m.

He was transported to hospital, where he died.

Police confirm the victim, believed to be in his 40s or 50s, sustained head injuries, but it is unclear if a weapon was used. They have not identified the victim.

There’s no immediate word on any charges.

“The arrest is usually one-tenth of the investigation. We’re glad to get somebody into custody [and] we’ll see if he turns out to be our main suspect,” Det. Scott Whittemore said at a news conference later in the morning.

“The investigation continues and it will go on for days from this point.”

An autopsy will be conducted on Tuesday afternoon.

The 224 Victoria Park North bus was being diverted in the area while police investigated, but has since resumed normal routing.
