Man dies in single-vehicle crash on Hwy. 401

A 28-year-old man has died after a single-vehicle crash on the westbound Highway 401 off-ramp to Keele Street.

It happened just before 2 a.m. on Wednesday.

Ontario provincial police said a black BMW sedan was travelling on the ramp when it left the roadway and into a grass median area, before hitting a piece of construction equipment.

The man was trapped in the car, and emergency crews had to use the jaws of life to pry open the vehicle’s roof and get him out.

He was rushed to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre where he later died.

No one else was in the car at the time, and it’s not yet known what caused the crash.

His name has been withheld pending next of kin.

The westbound off-ramp to Keele was closed for the collision investigation, but reopened at around 5:50 a.m.
