Caribbean Carnival ramps up Toronto Island Sunday

The party isn’t over yet.

Tens of thousands lined the streets for the Toronto’s annual Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival parade on Saturday, but the celebration continued Sunday on Olympic Island.

The family-friendly event ran from 10:30 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. and featured a fusion of popular Caribbean musical styles, including calypso and soca.

Commonly called Caribana, the overall event is a the three-week festival in its 47th year.

Organizers estimate about one-million people took in Saturday’s parade and for many tourists this is a weekend not to be missed.

“We come up every year for it,” Marvel Gayle of Detroit told CityNews, adding that there’s nothing like this in her city.

“I love it. It’s my third time here,” said Louis Stovel, who took part in the events as a member of the Junkando group from Bahamas. “I’m sorry I have to go home.”
