TTC proposes honour payment system for streetcars: report

The TTC is proposing an honour system for fare payments on all streetcars, in an effort to speed up commuting time for riders, according to a published report.

Right now on most routes, riders who have Metropasses or transfers must board the streetcar through the front doors and show the driver a ticket. However, that causes congestion and delays.

The Toronto Star reports TTC Chair Andy Byford is suggesting to allow commuters, who have already paid, to board through the back doors as well.

This proof-of-payment (POP) system is already in place on some routes and now the TTC board is considering rolling it out to all 11 as early as Jan. 1, 2015.

Originally, the TTC had planned to phase in POP gradually over the next five years with the rollout of the new fleet of streetcars.

The new, more immediate proposal, comes on the heels of a city staff report that concluded the top reason for delays on the busy King streetcar line is passengers taking their time getting on and off.

Currently, around 250,000 riders take streetcars on a daily basis.
