Suspect in custody after downtown double stabbing

One man is in life-threatening condition in hospital after a double stabbing on Sunday afternoon near River and Gerrard streets.

Toronto EMS says one victim was stabbed between six and seven times and was taken to hospital without vital signs, while another man is in hospital in serious but stable condition.

Emergency crews were called to an apartment complex at 220 Oak Street around 12:30 p.m. after reports of a fight.

Police say one person was taken into custody and a weapon was recovered.

“The suspect was located on the 17th floor of 220 Oak and taken in to custody,” Sgt. Dan Powell said. “We recovered a small edged weapon.”

Two scenes have been roped off for the investigation.

“Right now we’re containing two scenes,” said Powell. “We have an outdoor scene and a second scene inside the main lobby.”

Powell said he can’t confirm if either the suspect or the victims lived in the building.

Police will be canvassing the building to find any witnesses.

Powell said they are hoping the incident was caught on camera and that police are working with Toronto Community Housing to recover any footage available.
