Girl flown to SickKids after being hit by car in Markham

A six-year-old girl has been airlifted to a Toronto hospital after she was struck by a car in Markham on Thursday afternoon.

York regional police said the girl was on her bike and with her aunt when she was hit by the car and thrown about 10 metres at McCowan Road and Devonshire Avenue.

Police say her injuries were “significant.” She was first taken to Markham Stouffville Hospital by ground ambulance and later flown by air ambulance to SickKids hospital.

The male driver, who remained at the scene, was arrested for dangerous driving pending the outcome of the investigation.

Witness Shaquille Edwards said, “The light was green for her to cross on her bike. And I heard a loud bang and that’s when I saw the little girl right beside me on the street. She was unconscious, just lying there.”

Sgt. Peter Kalpouzos said, “It appears that the pedestrian was crossing on a green light from the west side of the street to the east side. And the vehicle proceeded to go through a red light going from north to southbound striking the child.”
