Canada-wide warrant issued for suspect in east end double stabbing

Toronto police have issued a Canada-wide warrant for the arrest of a 20-year-old man in connection with a double stabbing in the city’s east end that left one man dead.

Police say on Sept. 8 a fight broke out between a group of two males in the Danforth Avenue and Dawes Road around around 5:20 p.m.

During the fight, two males suffered stab wounds.

When emergency crews arrived on scene, one of the men was found without vital signs. He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police have identified him as Dwayne Goodwin, 22.

The second man suffered serious injuries. He has since been released from hospital.

Det. Rob North said the two groups were known to each other before the fight broke out.

“I want to make it clear – this was not a random act of violence,” he said.

North said that two males have since been arrested and charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder.

One of the arrested is 19-year-old Vaughn Shears of Toronto. The other suspect, a 16-year-old boy, cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

North says police are still searching for a third suspect, Mehmet Akkurt, 20, of Toronto, have have issued a Canada wide warrant for his arrest.

“At this time I’d like to appeal to Mr. Akkurt to obtain legal council and to surrender himself to police,” North said.

Four other males connected to the altercation have been identified by police and are being asked to turn themselves in.
