Warm weather to mark first week of fall

Say goodbye to the smell of sunscreen and hello to hot apple cider and pumpkin pie.

Fall officially arrives at 10:29 p.m. EDT on Monday.

Daylight in the Northern Hemisphere will continue to grow shorter until the winter solstice on Dec. 21.

It will be mainly cloudy, windy and cool on Monday with a high of 14 C. The temperature drops to a low of 8 C overnight.

However, the first week of fall will be a warm one, with temperatures in the low-20s expected over the next several days. On Tuesday, the forecast calls for a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 20 C.

“I think this next week and the next month are going to take our minds of what has been, for some, a bummer of a summer,” Environment Canada’s senior climatologist Dave Phillips said.

“Sunshine, blue skies, temperatures that are four or five degrees warmer than normal,” he said, adding that the warm trend could continue well into October.

Phillips also said the “colour change season is going to be gorgeous.”

On the bad news side, the Old Farmer’s Almanac is calling for a cold winter with above-average snowfall; however there is a silver lining.

“We’ll see right away, at least at the front end, a shorter winter than we had last year,” Phillips said. However, he is not ruling out snow before Remembrance Day.
