Security video shows man robbing woman, 91, at Chinatown apartment

Toronto police have released surveillance video showing a young man robbing a 91-year-old woman in front of the lobby of her apartment building in Chinatown.

Soo Ching Chew, who uses a walker to get around, can be seen on the video trying to enter the building at Spadina Avenue and Oxford Street on Sunday. Just as she opens the door a man rushes up behind her.

The video captures him pushing her and then wrestling away her purse before running away.

The suspect is described as a white, 20-25 years old, with short black hair. He was wearing a black T-shirt with blue shorts and carrying a white backpack with a black material or pattern.

Police believe he may frequent the Kensington Market area.

The elderly victim says she lost jewelry, her bank book, and her monthly grocery money, $270, in the theft. She also lost her keys and couldn’t get into her apartment following the attack.

Her family is raising safety concerns with building management, saying the outside of the TCHC complex needs more lighting.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call police at 416-808-1406, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477), online at www.222tips.com, or text TOR and your message to CRIMES (274637).
