Visitation to be held Thursday for Nahom Berhane; funeral Saturday

Funeral services will be held this week for a man who was stabbed to death outside a pool hall near Danforth and Greenwood avenues early Saturday morning.

Nahom Berhane, 34, who leaves behind a 13-year-old daughter, has been described as someone who touched the lives of many people in his family and community.

Berhane was well known in Toronto’s Eritrean community, volunteering as an organizer with CITY Leaders, a youth group connected with the United Way.

A visitation will be held between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m on Thursday at Jarrett Funeral Homes on Yonge Street.

On Saturday, Berhane will be laid to rest at Beechwood Cemetry, following a funeral service at Medhane Alem Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church, near Eglinton Avenue West and Dufferin Street, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Berhane’s family is asking that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to a trust fund set up in his name at TD Bank — account #6527028 and branch #1800. Cheques can be written out to ‘Nahom Berhane in Trust.”

So far, no suspect description has been released in the case.
