Witnesses are being sought by Peel police after a 37-year-old mother was struck and killed Friday in Mississauga.
The woman was hit by a vehicle at around 5:15 p.m. when she and her nine-year-old son were walking across Cawthra Road, south of Burnhamthorpe Road. The victim, whose identity hasn’t been disclosed, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Neighbours have identified the woman as a mother of three who was struck only steps from her home.
Her son was treated in hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the vehicle, who wasn’t hurt, remained at the scene.
Area residents say pedestrians crossing the street mid-block is a common sight because there is a full kilometre between traffic lights. Some say they would like the city to install a crosswalk in the area to prevent these kinds of deaths in the future.
Investigators are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the collision or the actions of the pedestrian and the driver prior to the incident.
Anyone with information is asked to contact investigators with the Major Collision Bureau at (905) 453-2121, ext. 3710.
