GO riders could face 5% fare hike as of Feb. 1

If you take GO Transit, your ride may soon get more expensive.

Provincial transit agency Metrolinx has proposed a fare hike of around five per cent Feb. 1, 2015.

Metrolinx spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins said they have seen their boardings increase 22 per cent since 2008, and they have to meet those needs.

“By the end of this year, we’re going to have 68 million boardings, so we need to be able to keep up with the increasing demand of those services,” Aikins said.

The transit agency said the hike will be implemented on a tiered basis.

“We have four tiers of pricing, based on a couple of things: how far you go, whether or not you use a Presto card,” Aikins said.

“Let’s say you were just going from Union Station to the CNE, the current adult single ticket is $5.20, or if you use a Presto card, it’s $4.68, so it’s different. The proposed increase would go from $5.20 to $5.30, or $4.68 to $4.77.”

Single adult fares would increase as follows:

  • 10-cent increase on the minimum fare of $5.20
  • 30-cent increase on fares between $5.21 and $6.50
  • 40 cent increase on fares between $6.51 and $8.25
  • 50-cent increase on all fares over $8.25

Presto fares would also increase, but discounts offered to Presto users, seniors and students would remain unchanged.

Metrolinx board members will vote on the proposed fare hike at their meeting on Thursday, which starts at 8 a.m. Click here to read the agenda.

According to the transit agency, the proposed fare hike would generate an estimated $23.5 million in extra revenue on an annual basis.
