Metrolinx board approves 5% hike in GO fares

Provincial transit agency Metrolinx’s board of directors has approved a five-per-cent increase in GO Transit fares, effective Feb. 1, 2015.

GO Transit says the hike will be implemented on a tiered basis based on distance and whether a Presto card is used.

Single adult fares would increase as follows:

  • 10-cent increase on the minimum fare of $5.20
  • 30-cent increase on fares between $5.21 and $6.50
  • 40-cent increase on fares between $6.51 and $8.25
  • 50-cent increase on all fares over $8.25

Metrolinx President and CEO Bruce McCuaig said the higher price is needed to meet service demand.

“I think people realize in their day to day life that costs go up and we need to manage those costs and a fare increase is one way to address that,” McCuaig said.

According to the transit agency, the fare hike will generate an estimated $23.5 million in extra revenue every year.

The board has also given formal approval to the Union-Pearson Express train fares that it announced on Wednesday.

A one-way trip will be $27.50 for adult riders, $19 dollars for Presto users and $10 dollars for airport employees.

The new service is expected to begin operating in the spring.
