Line up begins for annual Honest Ed’s turkey giveaway

The annual Honest Ed’s turkey giveaway may be a day away but one man is already making sure he gets his bird.

Mariano Cordeiro began lining up around 6 p.m. on Friday to solidify his spot at the front of the line.

“I don’t mind putting up with the cold for a couple of days,” he told CityNews.

The first-come, first served tradition at Bloor and Bathurst streets was started by the store’s founder, the late Ed Mirvish, in 1987.

Cordeiro says he has taken part in the event 24 of the 27 years it has been happening.

“It’s been a tradition for me,” he explained. “A few times I’ve come I’ve donated the turkey and other times I’ve taken the turkey to my family and we’ve enjoyed it together.”

This year it’s expected that six tonnes of turkey will be given away.

“I’m so grateful that his son continued this tradition because unfortunately there are families out there that struggle,” Cordeiro said.

He says he will continue his annual tradition until the store closes in 2016.

“It’s unfortunate that the store’s going to go, but for all the years they’ve done (the giveaway), and all the families that they have helped… I’m sure that they are grateful and I’m grateful to be here.”

The Honest Ed’s turkey giveaway starts Sunday at 10 a.m.
