Toronto police take to Twitter to help solve 2012 murder

Inspired by a popular U.S. true crime podcast, Toronto police are taking to Twitter to help solve a 2012 homicide.

Mike Pimentel was fatally stabbed in Liberty Village early New Year’s Day.

Police say Pimentel, 24, got separated from friends after leaving the Liberty Grand banquet hall on the Exhibition grounds and was found at East Liberty Street and Hanna Avenue around 3 a.m. suffering from stab wounds. He died in hospital.

Despite images released shortly after of a woman believed to have been with the person responsible, Pimentel’s homicide remains unsolved.

In an effort to revive the public’s awareness in the case and perhaps bring forward new evidence, police have turned to social media.

They got the idea from the popular weekly podcast Serial, which looks at the 1999 murder of Hae Min Lee.

“It’s a very, very popular podcast that is being followed by both media and police personnel,” Det. Jeffery Tavares explained. “This idea was derived from that exact podcast.”

Toronto Det. Tam Bui posted images on Twitter of evidence collected at the scene using the hashtag #MikePimentelMurder.

Police re-posted a YouTube video created shortly after the stabbing appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Photos of evidence have been tweeted out every Saturday this month. Police say the final and most substantial clue will be posted on New Year’s Eve.
