2 accused of arson that destroyed abandoned Pickering homes

Two Stouffville men have been accused of setting fires to two abandoned Pickering homes that were destroyed on Sunday evening.

The first house was set ablaze at 10:30 p.m. on Sideline 34 in Pickering.

The second went up in flames shortly before midnight on Concession Road Seven in Pickering, which is just south of the first fire.

There were no reports of any injuries.

The men were taken into custody after a roadside stop of a truck in the area.

Joshua Hopkins, 18, and Thomas Pateras, 20, have each been charged with arson, mischief over $5,000, breaking and entering and possession of incendiary material.

Both were released on promises to appear and officer in charge undertakings.
