A cargo ship believed to be carrying hundreds of migrants is heading to Italy following an emergency call made by a passenger.
Earlier on Tuesday, the passenger called emergency services in Greece when the vessel was sailing off the coast of the island of Corfu in the Ionian Sea.
The passenger said that “we are without water, food and blankets.”
A nearby Greek frigate and a navy helicopter were dispatched to the area.
The frigate contacted the cargo ship’s captain, who said the ship was not in danger and didn’t request assistance, said a coast guard official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
It’s believed there are between 400 to 600 migrants on board.
The call comes two days after a Greek passenger ferry with more than 400 people on board caught fire in the same area.
