TDSB votes to keep Quan’s salary at $289K

The Toronto District School Board met at a private meeting Monday night to discuss the salary of its director of education.

After some discussion the board voted 10 to seven in favour of keeping Donna Quan’s salary at $289,000 – $17,000 more than the previous director Chris Spence.

In normal practice, a new director’s pay is determined in part by what the previous director was earning.

However, Quan’s salary is equal to that of Spence’s predecessor Gerry Connelly.

“There was some confusion around what the director should be paid or not paid,” TDSB chair Shaun Chen explained. “Rising out of that discuss the board made it very clear they want to tackle this issue head on and they want to find a solution.”

The meeting comes a day before an advisor appointed by the province will release a report that, among other things, will look at whether Quan’s salary is allowed.

The report will also look into the fact that Quan’s salary was negotiated during the public sector wage freeze.
