Toronto once again under an extreme cold weather alert

Toronto is facing yet another extreme cold weather alert on Tuesday.

The alert, which was issued by the city’s medical officer of health Dr. David McKeown, will be in effect until further notice.

Extra services are available to the homeless during extreme cold weather alerts, including two 24-hour drop-ins and extra shelter beds.

Street outreach is also increased and TTC tokens are also made available for people to get to shelters.

The city issues the alert when temperatures are set to reach -15 C or colder according to Environment Canada’s forecast.

However, the national forecaster is calling for a low of -13 C on Tuesday night. 680News meteorologist Harold Hosein is calling for a low of -12 C.

The city’s extreme cold weather alert system has been under scrutiny in recent weeks. Mayor John Tory says the system should be more flexible when it comes to protecting the vulnerable.

Three homeless men died in just over a week due to the frigid weather earlier this month. Last week, the city announced that it will be renting blocks of rooms in two motels in an effort to make extra space available for the homeless during the cold weather.

An second extreme cold weather alert was issued last Friday, but was lifted on Saturday.
