Massive asteroid 2004 BL86 to pass by Earth on Monday night

A massive asteroid is expected to pass by Earth on Monday night, but astronomers say it does not post a threat to us.

The asteroid, named 2004 BL86, is about 680 metres across, or about the size of six football fields.

Scientists say the asteroid will pass 1.2 million kilometres from the Earth, roughly three times the distance between this planet and the moon.

The asteroid is the largest known space rock predicted to come this close to us until 2027.

York University professor Prof. Paul Delaney told the Toronto Sun that if 2004 BL86 were to hit Earth, it would be an extinction-level impact.

Delaney said Canada will offer the best view of it. You can watch it online via York University’s observatory.
