Wrigley to close Toronto gum factory in 2016

Wrigley has announced that it will be closing its Toronto gum factory in March 2016.

The company said the closure is a part of a supply chain reorganization in North America and will affect 383 employees.

“Despite recent improvements in the gum category and increased productivity in our supply chain network, it has not been enough to offset declines in the gum category over recent years,” the company said in a statement.

Production from the Toronto factory will be transferred to the company’s Gainesville, Georgia facility.

The company said they will maintain a Wrigley Canada head office continue to invest their Canadian business, including the popular Excel brand.

The closure is yet another hit to the Canadian jobs market after several other companies announced layoffs this month.
