SmartTrack study motion passed, Scarborough subway debate shelved at council

A $1.6 million study on Mayor John Tory’s SmartTrack transit plan was approved by city council on Tuesday, after council voted not to reopen the Scarborough subway debate.

Coun. Josh Matlow had submitted questions to city staff about ridership projections and costs of the Scarborough subway project.

The council voted to take no further action rather than send the information to executive committee where it could reopen the debate.

SmartTrack was criticized by Ford, who called the transit system a “fancy streetcar plan” on Tuesday.

Coun. Matlow disagreed with Ford’s comparison, saying anyone claiming that heavy rail and streetcars are the same, “they are not telling you the truth.”

Francis D’Souza will host Toronto Headlines on Wednesday on Rogers TV at 8 p.m., with guests TTC CEO Andy Byford and Councillor Josh Colle to answer your questions about transit.
