Plan for liquor kiosks in select Ontario grocery stores put on hold

The LCBO won’t be going ahead with plans to put kiosks in grocery stores at the moment.

The pilot program was to put smaller retail outlets in urban supermarkets as a test for wider distribution.

Ten kiosks were supposed to be open by the end of 2014, and while that deadline was missed, the government had last indicated the program was still going forward. The Canadian Press (CP) reports that lease agreements were being finalized with retailers in London, Mississauga and Toronto.

Now, the provincial government has shelved the idea as it looks at wider-ranging plans to overhaul the sale of alcohol, the CP reports.

“I think it makes sense that we wouldn’t take an isolated plan that we had previously and continue with it when there’s a bigger discussion happening now,” Wynne explained.

The CP said that the Liberals have asked TD Bank CEO Ed Clark to make recommendations in the spring budget.

The recommendations could include widening the ownership structure of the Beer Store and allowing more beer sales at the LCBO.
