2 Brampton teens charged with assaulting police officer

Two teenage girls are facing several charges after a violent confrontation with a police officer was caught on tape.
Police said the incident happened Tuesday at around 12:30 p.m. outside St. Marguerite D’Youville school on Dixie Road in Brampton.
The video, which was posted to social media and has since gone viral, shows what appears to be one of the teens repeatedly slapping a female officer. Eventually, another girl is seen pulling the officer back before the two girls run away.
They were arrested not far from the scene a short time later.
CityNews has learned that the officer works at St. Marguerite D’Youville as a liaison officer.
Students at the school told CityNews she’s popular and amicable.
“I was concerned because she’s a really nice lady,” said student, Austin Coyne. “She’s always one to smile and make jokes and she knows most of the students by name and is just a really friendly person.”
The president of the Peel Regional Police Association said the officer is “doing fine and is back on duty.”
At a Wednesday conference, Paul Black said the officer dealt with the situation appropriately.
“She’s in good spirits and is quite honestly wishing this isn’t as public as it is,” he said.
He also expressed disgust that the person who videotaped the incident failed to help, and instead “found the incident humorous.”
Her colleagues were also praising her for her restraint.
“She seems very calm, she seems incredibly in control of herself.” said Peel Const. Fiona Thivierge.
The identities of the teens have not been released due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act, but police did confirm on Wednesday that the girls are 15 and 16 years of age.
The 15-year-old girl faces charges of assaulting police, assisting and escaping lawful custody, obstructing and trespassing.
The 16-year-old girl faces charges of trespassing, assaulting police and escaping lawful custody.
Police said the school called police to report two girls trespassing on its property.
The girls were not permitted to be there as they didn’t attend the school.
Another officer who was in the area assisted in the arrest. Pepper spray was used to subdue the girls.
They will appear in court on March 17.
