Bombs kill dozens in Nigerian city of Maiduguri

Chaos in northeastern Nigeria, in the heartland of territory controlled by Islamic militants.

Four bombs hit the city of Maiduguri, capital of Borno, a state where Boko Haram is at their strongest, killing around 50 people and injuring dozens more.

These bombings come just weeks after militants tried to take the city by force — coveting it as the capital of a new Islamic State they are determined to carve out of Nigeria

They seized territory the size of Belgium last year — and gained worldwide notoriety when they kidnapped more tha 200 schoolgirls.

These latest attacks come just weeks before Nigeria’s embattled president, Goodluck Jonathan, faces reelection amid criticism of his failure to crush Boko Haram.
