Tentative deal reached for Toronto police officers

A tentative agreement has been reached for the 8,000 officers and staff represented by the Toronto Police Association.

Toronto Police Services Board chair Alok Mukherjee announced the deal at the start of the police board meeting on Thursday.

He said he expects the ratification vote will take three to four weeks.

At this point, there’s no indication whether the police association will be recommending this deal to its members.

The contract has a huge potential impact because police salary and benefits make up about 90 per cent of the annual $1.1-billion police budget.

The previous contract for Toronto officers and other police staff expired on Dec. 31.

At the meeting, former mayor John Sewell asked the police board for assurances that G20-like “kettling” and “brutality” won’t be used against those protesting the Toronto 2015 Pan Am and Parapan American Games.

Chief Bill Blair said while kettling happened at G20, it was never part of Toronto police training or a response plan for the summit.
