The Toronto Catholic District School Board trustees have made enough cuts to keep the provincial government at bay.
In their final meeting, trustees made cuts to I.T services, free parking for teachers, text books and at least most of a targeted five-per cent reduction in general non-staff cuts.
Since talks began in February, the board has also cut almost 200 teaching positions.
The board was tasked with eliminating a total budget deficit of $34.3 million. By the end of the meeting they remained $4.6 million short.
“We’re on track,” TCDSB chair Mike del Grande explained. “(Staff) will try to look at other avenues to make up that difference before the end of June.”
The board had to have a financial plan in place by June or risk the province appointing a supervisor.
Every school board in Ontario is required to operate on an annual balanced budget and the board worked with finance experts from the Ministry of Education to formulate a special three-year financial recovery plan.
