CBC lays off more than 200 employees, including videographers

The CBC is laying off more of its employees, the public broadcaster reports, adding to the growing list of layoffs earlier this year.

According to the Canadian Media Guild, 241 positions were eliminated.

With the latest notice, more than 1,500 jobs have been cut so far this year, or 17 per cent of the CBC’s workforce.

The cuts were made nationally, the Guild said, impacting a large number of videographer positions in regional stations.

“Videographers are an essential part of newsgathering,” said Marc-Philippe Laurin, the CBC branch president at the Guild.

“The images they shoot bring stories alive on video, whether for television, digital, or online programming, and recently, their work has also been used on radio reports to make up for previous cuts.”

The CBC also announced it is “severing ties” with suspended executives Chris Boyce and Todd Spencer in the wake of the Jian Ghomeshi scandal.

In March, the broadcaster announced it was cutting 140 positions in its local news division, as it grapples with a $130-million budget shortfall. However, it said 80 jobs would be added to website and mobile platforms.

In June of last year, the CBC said it would be slashing 25 per cent of its workforce over the next five years, in a bid to shift its focus from radio and television to digital and mobile services.
