Toronto police chief likely to be chosen Friday, sources say

A new Toronto police chief will likely picked on Friday, sources tell CityNews.

Once the candidates have been made aware of the decision, it’s believed that Mayor Tory could make the announcement as early as this weekend.

Who is Peter Sloly?

  • Peter Sloly is in his 25th year with the Toronto Police Service.
  • He used to play professional soccer and was a member of the Canadian National Soccer Team. He told Toronto Life that he played one game against Cyprus in 1984 and they tied 0–0. He said he eventually blew out his back and parts of his vertebrae are metal.
  • He participated in a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Kosovo.
  • He was a board member for several organizations, including YMCA of Greater Toronto, the Ontario Science Centre and Covenant House Toronto.
  • He has an MBA from the Schulich School of Business at York University.

Who is Mark Saunders?

  • Mark Saunders is in his 32nd year with the Toronto Police Service.
  • He is TPS’s executive sponsor of the Toronto Pan Am/Parapan American Games, responsible for safety and security.
  • He created an cybercrime unit within the TPS which police says is to “maximize the use of technology in policing” and “to solve and prevent cybercrimes.”
  • He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Justice Studies from Guelph Humber University.
  • He learned about counter-terrorism and leadership issues in Scotland and Ireland.
  • He is a photographer and donates his work to charities.
