Peel public high school teachers could strike Monday

Public high school students in Peel Region could face a teachers’ strike on Monday if contract negotiations fail over the weekend.

Peel District School board said the decision to take job action could come down as late as midnight on Sunday.

The two sides met on Thursday in hopes to avoid a strike; however, it’s not clear if any progress was made.

The board is in a legal strike position and high school teachers could join Durham and Sudbury at the picket lines in days if no contract agreement is met.

Peel secondary schools are advising students to check the board’s website and Twitter page for any updates.

Halton, Waterloo, Lakehead and Ottawa-Carleton will also be in a strike position by the end of the week but they have not given the mandatory five-days notice to walk off the job.

Meanwhile, Peel elementary teachers could also face job action. They have received a “no-board” report and will be in a legal strike position on May 10.

All English-speaking Catholic teachers in both elementary and secondary schools have voted 94 per cent in favour of job action, but have not set a strike deadline.
