Over 2,000 people protest new sex-ed curriculum at Queen’s Park

Thousands of people gathered together at Queen’s Park to rally in protest about the new sex-ed curriculum on Sunday.

It wasn’t just people opposing the new changes to the sex-ed curriculum but some agreeing with it.

Rally goers shouted “we said no,” as two members of The Toronto Sisters attended the large protest.

“I am gay and I don’t disagree. I think the curriculum is very very good,” said one of The Toronto Sisters.

The two are part of a group, that on Facebook, describes themselves as a group of nuns of all genders, sexualities, and spiritualties who are devoted to community service, ministry and outreach to those on the edges, and to promote human rights, respect for diversity and spiritual enlightenment.

The Toronto Sisters know that people are very passionate about the new sex-ed curriculum and they respect that but that they are also passionate about their viewpoint too.

“I keep hearing over and over how this isn’t about anti-homosexuality, it’s not about homophobia, and yet the first thing they say is: why are you wearing a dress?”

Gada Meek, a protest organizer, said that she tried to tell their marshal to calm things down.

“We are not here to have a fight, we are here to focus on sending a message to our legislature,” said Meek.

Many parents came to send yet another message to Premier Kathleen Wynne with signs that read “my child, my voice.”

Thew new program includes several changes including teaching children about same sex marriage in grade three and teaching them about puberty in grade four.
