Pan Am HOV lanes won’t stay past Games: report

They’ve inspired a torrent of complaints, and in some cases sparked creativity, but for those who consider the temporary HOV lanes the bane of their existence, take solace – they’ll soon be gone.

In a statement to Global News, the Ministry of Transportation says there are no plans to keep the lanes on provincial highways once the Toronto Pan Am and Parapan Am Games wrap up next month.

Data about how the lanes were used will be collected by the Ministry for future planning, Global reported.

The revelation comes on the heels of a new Forum Research poll for the Toronto Star that found despite the negative press surrounding the lanes, most drivers surveyed (62 per cent) didn’t experience a disruption to their daily routine.

According to the poll, 27 per cent of respondents said they plan to or have attended a Pan Am event, while 16 per cent said they’re not sure. Fifty-five per cent say they don’t plan to attend the Games at all.

Forum polled a random survey of 825 Torontonians on Tuesday and Wednesday by interactive voice response. The results have a margin of error of four percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

The city of Toronto has yet comment on the ultimate fate of the HOV lanes on the Gardiner Expressway and Don Valley Parkway.
