Child, 10, dies in hospital after Hwy. 401 crash on Friday

A 10-year-old boy has died in hospital after he suffered life-threatening injuries in a 20-vehicle crash on Highway 401 near Whitby on Friday.

Two adults and a 12-year-old boy were also killed in the serious collision in a construction zone, which involved four tractor-trailers. Investigators said the vehicles that the deceased were in ended up underneath the tractor-trailers.

“It appears that one of the transport trucks was traveling westbound and as traffic began to slow in front of it due to construction this vehicle did not slow down and continued right into the back of traffic,” OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said.

“With all these vehicles crumpled up, it’s an unbelievable scene here with steel and aluminum twisted around from these vehicles that are not even recognizable as cars,” Schmidt said.

Four other people were rushed to hospital in critical condition and 11 others suffered serious injuries.

Schmidt said there were no environmental conditions and visibility was good at the time of the collision.

The highway was closed in both directions between Brock Street and Salem Road overnight while officials conducted their investigation and crews worked to clean up the debris.

The investigation is ongoing but no charges have been laid.
